I am a learning technologist (Learning Technology Fellow) and established academic with a number of publications. I’ve been studying and working with educational and learning technologies since 1999. Initially for my PhD then at the UCL Institute of Education.
I am interested in how technology is used to support all types of learning, and have a specific interest in the technologies and pedagogies involved with:
- Distance & online education
- Blended learning and flipped learning approaches.
- Self-regulated learning (SRL) and support of SRL through the use of online technologies.
- Bring your own device (BYOD) learning environments.
- Web-based collaboration.
- Interactive learning environments.
- Accessibility and GDPR
Technologies and specialist areas that I work with on a very regular basis include:
- Moodle CMS
- H5P
- Website design, HTML and CSS
- Videos
- Images and graphics.
- Photography and editing
- Games for education

Play, youth and childrens work
My experience with play has come through working with young people through youth and children’s work, both voluntary and paid, for over 40 years. Running and organising successful youth clubs and summer play schemes. Central to this has been the value of play and empowerment, giving young people opportunities to be themselves, explore and experience.
Photography
I’m not a naturally gifted graphic artist, but I discovered photography in my teens – starting out with a film SLR and appreciating how much a single photograph could to capture emotion and atmosphere of that moment in time, or the power of a good portrait. As I developed my skills in photography, I also appreciated more the technical aspects of this art form. Framing and how different light affects the image; how to take advantage of natural light or use light to get a specific look. Also the interactions between f-stop, focus, depth of field, ISO and exposure length (shutter speed).
